As summer starts winding down, the birds begin to molt, or lose their feathers to make room for new plumage. Chickens molt twice a year. During molt, birds typically stop laying as they are preserving their energy for the upcoming seasonal changes. Nutrients are especially important for hens. Our birds were given a treat today- scrambled eggs, pumpkin seeds, oregano, and garlic. Roasted and crushed egg shells too. Zero waste and grown in our garden. We began using hemp in the coops this summer. Not only does it smell better, but it breaks down faster in our compost than the pine shavings which were beginning to pile up! We have had a hot and wet summer which can make for a pretty stinky run
